How to Get to Tenggol Island

Tenggol is remote but very reachable. Most travellers route through Kuala Lumpur or Kuala Terengganu to the Dungun jetty, then take a short boat transfer across to the island.

From Kuala Lumpur, the simplest options are to drive directly to Kuala Dungun or fly to Kuala Terengganu and continue by road.

Drive to Kuala Dungun

Route: Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Dungun to Boat to Tenggol

The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Dungun is roughly 360 km and usually takes around 4–4.5 hours, depending on traffic and stops.

Boats to Tenggol depart from the jetty near Kuala Dungun. Confirm the exact departure point and time with your dive operator or accommodation in advance, as transfers are usually scheduled to match guest arrivals rather than running on fixed public timetables.

    From Kuala Lumpur, drive ~4.5 hours to Dungun, or fly to Kuala Terengganu and transfer south by road.

    Boat transfer to the island

    Operators run boat transfers across to Tenggol, taking around 45 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Kuala Terengganu (TGG) is the nearest airport, about 1.5 hours by road north of the Dungun jetty. Many visitors also drive directly from Kuala Lumpur.

The boat transfer from the Dungun jetty takes roughly 45 minutes, depending on sea conditions.

It is possible but not ideal. Because of the travel involved, most visitors stay at least one or two nights to make the journey worthwhile.
